Being in the Flow

In the Hollywood Movie Let It Ride, actor Richard Dreyfus is portrayed as a racecourse addict who has a “Flow Day” or a “Barren Day”. Normally, he is a big loser, when it comes to picking a winning horse. His addiction puts a serious strain on his job and marriage. He is in danger of losing both. No matter, what he does on his FLOW day, he just cannot lose. He wing every bet he makes, is admired by everyone around him. Even when he makes a wrong choice he still wins. For instance, in one race, he picked the wrong horse but he still won. It changed the life around him, which ultimately changed his life. He became rich, his marriage improved and he happily lived ever after!

I have seen a person playing in the share market having the intuition and instinct when to stop and when to raise the stakes. Ultimately, he became a crorepati. His wife who cursed him for his gambling nature was silenced and became decoted to him. She said, “This man has a gift to place the stakes at the correct time. He sees things differently and creates his own reality.”

I have experienced this while in the police too. While handling a crowd, sometimes your judgement is correct and sometimes wrong. It is the instinct, inner voice, which tells you how and when to take action and when to stop. Of course, it comes from experience and hard thinking. My Boss used to say, “As you direct your energy and attention outward, it will be reflected back to you. And the more you project, the more you will receive. This is the state of flow and it is within your control. If your energy and attention are centered outside towards others, you will find that you will succeed. The so-called ‘luck’ and coincidences would increase dramatically; What you search for, will find you.”

The truth is that the teachers in your life could only teach you what they themselves know and no more. From actual challenges and struggles in life, you learn what your teachers did not know. There are universal laws which work all the time whether you know about them or not. The only way to get success is to give success. Because anything in life that is worth having comes to you after you give it away. For example, you love someone and you get loved. Make someone happy and you receive happiness. Help others to become successful and you achieve success.

There was an insurance agent who thought that he was a good salesman, able to convince people that the proposal was good. His boss had warned that he should at least make 15 presentations per week. So, he went about making presentations with lost of preparation and study. Whereas he was able to convince only one customer per week, his colleagues made five to six successful proposals.

One day, he asked a senior colleague whether he could accompany him to which the senior agreed. Well, just five minutes into the presentation, he understood that his colleagues whole concentration was not to get a policy but to help a customer to select the best offer. Well, from then onwards, our friend knew how to go about and he became a successful agent.

Remember, that every successful person is surrounded by others who benefit from their success. Successful people become heroes and champions by bringing success into the lives of others. The saying is “My job is to help you. Your job is to try to be helped. The only way to get success is to give success. Success is possible only through other people. You cannot be successful by yourself.” There are saying like “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” or “Don’t burn your bridges behind you” or “Always leave the door open.”

Well, if you don’t burn the bridges, don’t close all the doors, you will never have the one-pointed objective and destination. If you burn the bridges, close the doors, you will think of how to break-through instead of choosing the easy way or shortcut to reach the destination. We should not construct safety nets so that we can play the game of life “not to lose.”
Anothe r misconception that is programmed into us early in life is the ability to open up multi-channels in your thinking, handling multiple tasks, simultaneously. The truth is that most people don’t discipline themselves to do just one thing till its completion. And how do you know whether your focus is correct? It is when that one thing or one thought pervades your waking and sleeping hours. A man will always accomplish his primary objective; if it is unknown to him. He comes to know about it when he tries!
